Shifting The Tides

I’m scared

I’m afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing that will further divide

I’m afraid for all of our lives now

I’m afraid for the world and how it will handle all that’s shaking out

I’m afraid that my fellow white man doesn’t understand

at the deepest level

why all of this is happening

Probably like the black community has their entire lives

Feeling inferior to

Less than

and inadequate

no matter what they’ve done

or haven’t

Damned if they did

and damned if they didn’t

and even though many of us didn’t

start the fire

that is raging right now

We get to decide how we will inhale the fumes

Anger has its place despite contrary belief

that jumps straight to love being the only answer

because it is the ultimate answer

And to bypass the anger

that is rightly justifiable

is another injustice

Not to destroy

but to burn away the angst

carried around

And we are now collectively breathing in the fumes

that have been long lingering below the surface

It’s time we all took a knee

Both of them

with hands folded in prayer

asking for forgiveness

of our trespasses and transgressions

and those of our ancestors

To allow the outrage

and find understanding in it

Compassion in the ash and debris

Seeing souls beyond the skin

and the spirit in which they are living in

It’s time to rise

and shift the tides

We are not all in the same boat

but we are all drops in the same ocean

and our collective humanity

calls for our remembrance

that WE ARE in fact ALL ONE…
